Should I Repair or Replace My HVAC System?
At High Altitude Heating & Air, we believe it’s important that you are aware of all the factors that can influence the decision to repair or replace your HVAC system. Here is a tool that can serve as a helpful starting point for understanding your options.
When Replacement May Be the Smarter Move
It might be wiser to seriously consider investing in a new system if:
- Your warranty has expired or doesn’t cover current issues.
- The system is at or beyond its expected life span (10–15+ years for many HVAC systems, depending on system type).
- You’ve had 3 or more major repairs recently.
- The system’s performance is clearly declining: the system is struggling to reach the desired temperature, cooling/heating takes longer, or inconsistent comfort.
- You intend to stay in your home for many years, meaning you’ll reap more value from a more efficient system over time.
- You want improved energy efficiency, reduced monthly costs, and modern features (better controls, newer refrigerants, etc.).
- Your system uses older refrigerant (R-22 / Freon) or obsolete components, making parts costly or scarce.
- The system age x cost calculation is above $5,000
When Repairing Makes Sense
Here are some additional factors to consider where repairing your system might be the best decision:
- Your system is still under warranty (so repair costs may be partially or fully covered).
- The system is less than 10 years old or younger than its expected life span.
- You’ve only had 1 or 2 issues in the past few years.
- You plan to move in the next 7 years.
- The system is still reasonably efficient and performs well on most days.
- The system age x cost calculation is under $5,000
